Education Minister Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh on Wednesday, 25 November 2020 inaugurated the maiden Governing Council of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) on behalf of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

GTEC was created under the Education Regulatory Bodies Act 2020 (Act 1023) to guide the activities of all regulatory bodies under the Ministry of Education.

In particular, the GTEC has emerged out of the merger of the National Council for Tertiary Education (NCTE) and the National Accreditation Board (NAB).

In his remarks, Dr Prempeh recalled that the Government took the view that a comprehensive, coherent, well-articulated and holistic policy framework was required to enable tertiary education system respond effectively and sustainably to the needs of the learning society and knowledge-driven economy that Ghana aspire.

“This was what set the roadmap to develop a holistic tertiary education policy to spell out clear guidelines for the ultimate structure, planning, development, regulation, operations and overall governance and accountability of the tertiary education system in one place, and one of the governance issues that emerged was to merge the NCTE and NAB into a single unit, the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission,” he said.

Dr Prempeh added that he has no doubt that the council will discharge its duties and terms of reference with distinction.
