Former President John Mahama’s choice of Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as his running mate for the 7 December 2020 polls will yield victory for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Deputy Women’s Organiser of the party, Maame Efua Houadjeto, has said in a statement of appreciation to the flag bearer of the party.

“This singular move, is in consonance with our flag bearer’s disposition toward women, in particular, and gender equality in general”, Mrs Houadjeto said, adding: “I wish to thank H.E. John Dramani Mahama, for, once again, demonstrating his desire and commitment to the advancement of women in Ghana by nominating the erudite educationist, Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, as his running mate for the 2020 general elections”.

In her view, the former Education Minister adds a lot of value to the NDC’s ticket, which, according to her, will bolster the party’s quest for victory in the 2020 polls.

“I believe that as Ghana’s first-ever female Vice-Chancellor of a university, who executed her mandate with precision and dexterity to etch her name in the country’s academic annals, Prof Naana Opoku-Agyemang, will, yet again, score another first by becoming Ghana’s first-ever female Vice-President because she is a great complement to H.E. John Dramani Mahama, and in such a winning ticket, victory is assured”, Mrs Houadjeto noted.

APPRECIATION TO HE. JOHN DRAMANI MAHAMAON HIS CHOICE OF PROF. JANE NAANA OPOKU-AGYEMAN AS HIS RUNNING MATE

It is with a deep sense of gratitude mingled with a lot of pride that I wish to felicitate our flag bearer John Dramani Mahama on his choice of Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyeman to be his running mate on the NDC Presidential ticket.

This singular move is in consonance with our flag bearer’s disposition toward women, in particular, and gender equality in general. I wish to thank H.E. John Dramani Mahama, for, once again, demonstrating his desire and commitment to the advancement of women in Ghana by nominating the erudite educationist, Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, as his running mate for the 2020 general elections.

Over many decades, gender activists have been advocating the inclusion of women at the highest echelons of decision-making. It is, thus, heart-warming that at long last, the largest political party in Ghana has chosen a woman, and a woman of substance for that matter as its running mate.

We would recall that it was during H.E. John Mahama’s tenure that an appreciable number of women were appointed to not only the Executive arm of Government but also the head and membership of many Boards and Corporations. It comes to us as no surprise that H.E. John Dramani Mahama has been consistent with his push for women to break the glass ceiling in Ghanaian politics – a very difficult terrain dreaded by most women.

I further want to seize this opportunity to congratulate Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyeman for her nomination by the flag bearer and subsequent ratification by the Council of Elders and the National Executive Committee of our great party the NDC. Prof, your selection is certainly not only as a result of you being a woman but more of a testimony to your many achievements in academia on both the local and international scene.

With such impeccable academic, social and moral credentials, I have no iota of doubt that H.E. John Dramani Mahama’s choice of a well-educated, properly-cultured and decorous mother and woman of great repute and admiration like Prof Opoku-Agyemang, would make an ideal partner on the NDC Presidential ticket.

I call on the entire rank and file of the NDC and all well-meaning Ghanaians to warmly welcome and support H.E. John Dramani Mahama’s very clean and well-thought-out choice of a running mate as we march toward victory 2020.

I believe that as Ghana’s first-ever female Vice-Chancellor of a university, who executed her mandate with precision and dexterity to etch her name in the country’s academic annals, Prof Naana Opoku-Agyemang, will yet again score another first by becoming Ghana’s first-ever female Vice-President because she is a great complement to H.E. John Dramani Mahama, and in such a winning ticket, victory is assured.

As an Education Minister who superintended the historic infrastructural development in that sector, which culminated in the building of several E-blocks coupled with the sweeping pro-poor transformations she initiated on the landscape of education, I sincerely believe that in Prof Opoku-Agyemang, H.E. John Dramani Mahama will find a worthy and competent partner who will bring her academic prowess and motherliness to bear on the Presidency.

‘Ayekoo’ to Prof Opoku-Agyemang and we pledge our undiluted and ever-ready support to her and the ticket to successfully prosecute the 2020 elections for victory.

Signed

Maame Efua Houadjeto

Deputy Women’s Organiser, NDC
