A number of parents and guardians in Sunyani town have expressed worry about the current teachers’ strike action and appealed to Government to fast-track and end negotiations with the teacher unions for their children to return to school.
The parents made the appeal in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Wednesday in Sunyani, saying if the teachers refused to end the strike immediately, the pupils and students would lose a lot academically.
Madam Akua Amponsah, a trader and mother of four told Ghana News Agency (GNA) that she could not go to work because she had to stay at home to care for her children.
Ghana’s four teacher unions – the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT), and the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) on Monday, July 04, 2022, declared an indefinite strike for the government’s failure to pay Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) to members.
Mad Amponsah said many parents could not continue to stay at home with the children because some mothers who were single parents needed to work for their families’ survival.
She therefore pleaded with the Government to listen to the teachers and endeavour to reach a compromise with their leadership in the interest of the school children.
There were no activities going on in all the public schools the GNA visited around the central business district of Sunyani, except that some pupils who lived around those schools were spotted playing.
But some of them, Junior High School students who spoke to the GNA expressed their unhappiness about the situation as disappointment had registered on their faces.
They however, said “we have no option than to listen to news on the airwaves to monitor if the teachers would call off the strike by tomorrow.”
